ERDT Thesis/Dissertation Writing Seminar 2022

The ERDT Thesis/Dissertation Writing Seminar 2022 was held on 27 June 2022. The event was conducted virtually via Zoom, and was streamed live on YouTube. More than 900 participants from the ERDT Consortium and other universities and institutions joined the Seminar.

Prof. Ferdinand Manegdeg formally started the program by thanking everyone in the webinar room for choosing to spend their day with ERDT to attend the Seminar. He also encouraged them to participate in the discussions and maximize the opportunity to learn from the esteemed speakers.

Dr. John Frederick Tapia, the first speaker for the morning session, presented a brief overview of the research process and gave tips on how to plan and structure a thesis/dissertation. Dr. Mae Joanne Aguila then talked about the ins and outs of writing the literature review and stressed its significance in research. Furthermore, Dr. Fernando Paragas laid out important points on how graduate researchers can effectively organize the chapters of their thesis/dissertation and ensure that there is cohesiveness in thought throughout their entire paper.

In the afternoon session, Dr. Persia Ada De Yro emphasized the importance of feedback and mentorship for a graduate researcher. She also provided notes on properly asking for feedback and sharing responsibility with one’s research adviser and peers. Thereafter, Dr. Jonna Baquillas shared pointers for defense presentation, which include tips on how to organize materials, practice, and anticipate questions prior to the defense proper. Finally, Dr. Violeta Bautista facilitated a short session on mindfulness and taught the participants a number of exercises that they can do to manage stress especially while they are doing their research.  Dr. Gerald Jo Denoga concluded the event by thanking the resource persons and the participants for making the seminar a productive and meaningful one. He also expressed his gratitude to the DOST Science Education Institute for its continuous support for the ERDT program, and reaffirmed ERDT’s commitment in helping develop the country’s R&D.
