ERDT R&D Track Heads

The ERDT Track Heads are in charge of (1) evaluating research project proposals to align with priority research areas before submitting them to the Department of Science and Technology for funding; (2) managing R&D programs of ERDT; (3) conducting focus group discussions and roundtable discussions with academe, industry, government agencies and other stakeholders to evaluate roadmaps and agenda; and (4) ensuring that ERDT projects are aligned with the National Science and Technology Plan and the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan and are relevant and transferrable to the country’s benefit.

ENERGY R&D TRACK

 

DR. MICHAEL ANGELO PEDRASA

 

Dr. Pedrasa is the Program Coordinator of the Energy Engineering Program of UP Diliman. He has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales. His research interests include power systems, renewable energy and power electronics.

DR. LOUIS ANGELO DANAO

 

Dr. Danao is the Chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UP Diliman. He obtained his PhD from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. His research interests are solid and composite mechanics and wind and tidal energy conversion.

In 2018, Dr. Danao received the Gawad Tsanselor Para Sa Natatanging Guro award.

DR. MENANDRO BERANA

 

Dr. Berana is currently the Associate Dean for Research and Instruction of the College of Engineering, UP Diliman. He finished his doctorate degree in Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan in November 2009. Dr. Berana specializes on alternative refrigeration systems, renewable energy and two-phase flows. His research interests include cooling and power generation from recoverable heat and other energy sources, energy efficiency, automation and manufacturing systems.

ENVIRONMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE R&D TRACK

 

 

DR. MARIA ANTONIA TANCHULING

 

Dr. Tanchuling is the Director of UP Diliman’s Institute of Civil Engineering. She earned her BS in Civil Engineering and MS in Environmental Engineering degrees from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1988 and 1998, respectively.  In 2005, she graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology with a PhD in Civil Engineering, where she worked on developing a column test to determine contaminant transport parameters in clay. She lectures and does researches on Solid Waste Management, Environmental Impact Assessment, Water Quality Management, and Water and Sanitation.

DR. LESLIE JOY DIAZ

 

Dr. Diaz is the Program Director of the Environmental Engineering Program of UP Diliman. She obtained her Doctorate Degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2006. Dr. Diaz’s research interests include synthesis of composite materials, mechanical, thermal and morphological characterization of materials, nanomaterials, wastewater treatment, green materials, and application/utilization of natural materials in various engineering applications.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY R&D TRACK

 

DR. JAN MICHAEL YAP

 

Dr. Yap is currently the Head of the Department of Computer Science, UP Diliman. He is affiliated with the Algorithms and Complexity Laboratory (ACLab), and heads both research groups on Computation for Biology with Relevant Algorithmics (CoBRA) and Representation, Analysis, Visualization, and Extraction of Information (RAVEn) under the aforementioned lab.

MANUFACTURING AND MACHINERY R&D TRACK

 

 

DR. RIZALINDA DE LEON

 

Dr. De Leon is the Dean of UP College of Engineering and the head of the Fuels, Energy and Thermal Systems Research Laboratory of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her research interests include catalytic and enzymatic processing of biomass/algae for production of ethanol/biodiesel & other essential chemicals, nanofluids synthesis and characterization, phase change materials (characterization and performance testing), photocatalysis for hydrogen production, modelling and simulation (blood flow, photocatalytic flow reactor, adsorption heat transfer, particle size distribution in CFB, etc…), and solar thermal energy applications in chemical engineering.

PROF. LOWELL LORENZO

 

Prof. Lorenzo is the current Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at UP Diliman. He also oversees the different research laboratories of the department which include the IEOR Computing Laboratory, Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory and the Information Systems Design, Education and Analytics Laboratory.  His research interests are Supply Chain Management, Scheduling and Enterprise Resource Planning Systems.

DR. TERENCE TUMOLVA

 

Dr. Tumolva is the Chairperson of the Department of Chemical Engineering, UP Diliman. He is also the Head of the Green Materials Laboratory of the Department working on green composites, biomaterials and green plastics processing.

SEMICONDUCTOR, MATERIALS AND ELECTRONICS R&D TRACK

DR. JOHN RICHARD HIZON

 

Dr. Hizon is the Director of the Elecrical and Electronics Engineering Institute of UP Diliman. He has obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering (Circuits and Systems) from Imperial College London.

Currently, he is interested in developing circuit techniques for low power reconfigurable analog circuits, low energy wireless sensor nodes and energy harvesters from multiple sources.

DR. MAGDALENO VASQUEZ, JR.

 

Dr. Vasquez is the Chairperson of the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering and the co-Program Coordinator of the Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Programs jointly offered by the College of Engineering and College of Science. His research interests are in the field of vacuum technology, plasma science, ion beams, and charged particle-materials interaction. His current focus is in the development of affordable plasma discharge systems for different industrial applications and for value-added material processing. Dr. Vasquez obtained his Doctorate degree from Doshisha University and obtained his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from UP Diliman.
