DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña reminding participants of the Nuclear Energy Forum that any energy policy has to be grounded on solid science and technology even more so in nuclear energy. The NEF was held last 22 August 2017 at the Novotel, Manila, Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City.
The National Engineering Center, Engineering Research and Development for Technology and UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. are hosting the Nuclear Energy Forum: Considerations and Essential Information on 22 August 2017 to discuss different aspects that need to be evaluated by decision makers and the public before deciding on pursuing nuclear power as a policy.

Connected People using Connected Gadgets – Internet of Things

          As a society, we are in an era of the "Internet of People": Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter; along with a myriad other social networking sites being ubiquitous and omnipresent. These social media platforms have revolutionized how people communicate and interact with each other, and their impact is felt in nearly all facets of human enterprise including commerce, entertainment, health, and politics. Yet despite its current importance, the Internet of People will soon give way to the "Internet of Things" (1oT). In a few years, our human senses to "see, hear, touch, smell and taste" and our ability to rearrange our environment will be supplemented with inanimate sensors and actuators that collect information, and communicate with one another. These devices will be rigidly managed by control algorithms that will make sense of voluminous data and perform appropriate actions to achieve a mission.

          This talk and the accompanying workshop are aimed at introducing the critical components of this burgeoning technology, and its potential applications in the Philippine context. I will discuss the elements of the IoT ecosystem from the device level to systems applications. At the foundation of an internet of Things infrastructure are the microelectronic circuits that perform data acquisition, signal processing, and communications within the device. These are performed by integrated circuits and microcontrollers that are incorporated within the device, commonly referred to as "embedded systems." These systems are now ubiquitous in household, health care and transportation systems as well as industrial applications such as power and manufacturing. These are the key elements in home automation products such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa, as well self-driving vehicle systems such as Alphabet Waymo and Tesla. At the other end are the data analytics, machine learning and control systems that process the information and implement applications. And in-between lies the computing platforms, protocols and gateways that seamlessly connect these devices, and process the data into actionable information while providing security that all is trustworthy and safe. I will provide an overview of how these elements fit together.

          The other aim of this visit is to further spur the intellectual activity in embedded systems and IoT in the Philippines. To this end, I will discuss the skills that are most needed, and will discuss a curriculum that adequately prepares engineering students to be gainfully employed and meaningfully contribute in this space.  The modern IoT curriculum will provide students with a solid foundation in key emerging. technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT), the ability to integrate devices into complete loT systems, and an understanding of how loT fits within the wider context of information and communications technology, including data analytics and cloud computing. Potential applications relevant to the needs of the Philippines such as smart agriculture, efficient manufacturing, waste reduction, disaster mitigation, ad hoc communications, healthcare, security, monitoring of aquatic resources, power grid and others will also be discussed.

      The accompanying workshop will introduce micro-controllers with wireless communication. It is intended for novices who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in programming these devices.  Low energy boards and chips from Texas Instruments’ Launchpad ecosystem will be used.  The lessons will start with a simple MSP430 micro-controller for introductory input and output operations and an introduction to the EnergiaTM coding application.  Next, the functions and implementation of the SensortagTM sensor cluster will be introduced, as well as programming the CC3200 making use of its built-in WIFI connectivity. Exercises will be conducted that demonstrate applications that push and pull data into and from a local computer and into the Cloud.  The Energia application will be introduced for beginning students while the Code Composer StudioTM will be utilized for the more advanced members of the audience. If accessible, a few Cloud based hosting and data analytics such as Dweet.io and Freeboard.io will be explored to seamlessly move push and visualize data in the Cloud. It is anticipated that groups will brainstorm and design applications that harnesses the power of IoT technology for the common good.

 

About the speaker:

R.D. Mel Gomez is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland. He joined the department in 1996 as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2006. He currently serves as the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education. He teaches engineering design, circuits, microelectronics, electromagnetics, quantum theory and magnetic technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As an associate chair for undergraduate education, he helped strengthen the ECE curriculum in communications, embedded systems, cyber security, and power. He is the architect of a novel freshman course that introduces fundamental principles of ECE using hands-on pedagogy and a novel capstone design course on alternative vehicles. He is also the lead proponent of a new degree program to start Fall 2020 on Embedded Systems and Internet of Things at Universities at Shady Grove, a University System of Maryland higher education center. Dr. Gomez is also a researcher in the broad areas of micromagnetism and biosensing. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, several book chapters, a book and holds 3 U.S. Patents. He earned his PhD from the University of Maryland, MS from Wayne State in University and BS from the University of the Philippines all in Physics. Among his awards are the ECE George Corcoran Award for engineering education, the NSF CAREER award, the Clark School of Engineering Kent Faculty Teaching Award, the Clark School Keystone Professorship, the Clark School Faculty Service Award, PhilDev Excellence Award in Science and Technology and the Distinguished Alumni in Science and Technology of the University of the Philippines.  He has served as an Editor, an Editorial Board Member of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, the chair of the Technical Committee, and the General Chair of the Intermag Conference. He is a past president of the Philippine Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE). Among his projects in the Philippines are VISSER and Dengue Isothermal Diagnosis.
